Unlike
the late '70s and the roller coaster ride of the Reagan years, there are
no sure bets in art that will go through the roof value-wise. Still there
are some artists whose work will accrue wealth over time. All you need
to do is to find them, and it's far easier then you think.
There is more than a little truth in the cliché of, "I don't know what
art is, but I like it." That should be any collector's first rule. Beyond
it being an investment you need to like the art and live with it. There
are equivalents to day traders in the art world, but if you're just getting
your feet wet in the art realm, you have to learn about it, understand
what you like and do some research. Don't just learn which artist's work
you want to shell out some money for, learn what strengthens your spirit and
feeds your soul. That's the basic purpose of art, after all …
